Course Description
Honors World History and Geography is a year-long survey course structured around the investigation of six reoccurring historical themes and 19 key concepts in six different chronological periods, from approximately 8000 B.C.E. to the present. The course content introduces students to the geography, cultural, economic, political, and social developments that played a fundamental role in shaping the world in which they live.
At the Academy of Math, Engineering and Science we act upon the belief that courses based on rigor, relevance, and relationships enhance and deepen student learning. Student learning is also increased when students think critically and make interdisciplinary connections. Students are more likely to master content when it is systematically embedded and intertwined over an extended period of time.
The overall primary purpose of social studies at AMES is to develop in young people understanding and appreciation of the social sciences in order to help them make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good. As citizens of a democratic society in a culturally diverse and interdependent world, young people need to be able to examine complex issues. Students are expected to become active, responsible, concerned, and knowledgeable citizens.
Course Structure:
We have created a more explicit connection between World History and Human Geography by integrating the two courses and spreading them across two years rather than teaching them as two separate entities. This plan is supported by the statement in the World History Curriculum Framework: “Students need basic geographical knowledge in order to understand world history. . . Geospatial awareness is fundamental knowledge necessary for students to build an understanding of cross-cultural contacts, trade routes, migrations, etc. which constitute the key concepts in the World History course.” We created an interdisciplinary course embedding content as outlined by AP College Board.
Course Goals
Honors World History and Geography is a discipline that embraces and challenges students’ intellectual skills. In addition to providing a basic narrative of global events and themes, the goals of Honors World History and Geography are to develop
